Jan-Eric Alcén, Senior Master at Stena Vinga, exemplifies maritime leadership through calm authority, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to crew welfare. With decades of sea experience, he fosters a safety-first culture, encourages teamwork, and leads by example—navigating both challenges and people with integrity, foresight, and steady command.

Seminar – how to deal with external threats such as war and piracy? – Moderator Martin Carlsson, Stena

Martin has a career of leading, technical and business development roles in marine and automotive industry. Now based in Stena Teknik since 2019 working with, amongst other projects, ship safety. In recent years developing fire safety of RoRo and RoPax ships, supporting Swedish, UK and Danish Shipowners Associations and via Swedish Flagstate also work in IMO and EMSA. Martin is vice chairman of the board of Lighthouse – Swedish Maritime Competence Centre.

Conflict and war impact on crew – Steven Jones, Swellmarine

Steven, a former navigation officer with a decade of experience primarily on cable ships, holds a Chief Officer certificate and Masters' degrees in Marketing/Communications and International Relations. After transitioning to shore-based roles in maritime fraud, insurance, and security, he founded the Seafarers Happiness Index with the Mission to Seafarers to amplify crew voices through data-driven insights. A published author, Past President of Propeller Club Liverpool, Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Steven received the 2024 Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service.

Crew trauma of piracy incidents – Rachel Flynn Williams, Seaways Psychology

Dr Rachel is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years’ experience in mental health and psychological trauma. Working with P&I clubs, owners, crewing agencies and charities, she provides post-incident support, clinical assessment and interventions to seafarers and maritime personnel affected by events such as sudden death, serious injury, armed detention and vessel loss. She delivers training and consultation within the maritime sector, and has produced guidance on trauma at sea. Dr Rachel co-developed the TIMS®, a pioneering and award-winning trauma-informed approach to marine casualty investigation.

Practical experience of piracy/hybrid war – Erik Hånell, Stena Bulk

Erik Hånell is CEO of Stena Bulk, he began his maritime career in the early 1990s. In 1999, he joined Stena Bulk's commercial operations in Gothenburg, later moving to Houston in 2001. By 2009, he was appointed Executive Vice President & Head of Stena Bulk USA, and in 2012, he ascended to his current role as CEO. Hånell also serves on the boards of Skuld P&I Club and ITOPF. Erik was very active from owner side at the seizure of Stena Impero by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Strait of Hormuz 2019.

Sebastian Cole began his maritime career as a deck officer on oil and chemical tankers. With a Master’s in Maritime Management, he transitioned into port operations and security, serving as Deputy Harbour Master at Ports of Stockholm. Since 2023, he’s been part of Stena Line’s HSEQ team, focusing on safety and risk management.
