Interview with Eija Kanto, SVP & Partner, WEGA

Wega supports DSM2025 as Silver Sponsor. What contributed to make this decision?
For us DSM is a very important event to meet our current and new partners and clients. We have a close collaboration with several shipping companies, especially here at Donsö, and we have been participating in DSM over the decade. DSM has become one of the most important shipping events in northern Europe and we are happy to continue to support the event and the shipping community behind it.

As a water sponsor, we also like to emphasize the importance of sustainability and the protection of sensitive water ecosystems when promoting the competitiveness and development of the maritime sector.

Wega is an independent energy service company providing energy procurement services, supply chain development, market analyses, project development and grant consulting. For example, we offer bunker procurement services for shipowners and have successfully secured substantial public grants to support our clients’ green investments in the maritime sector. Our goal is to be a key player in the growing renewable energy markets, and we are currently developing biogas projects to meet the future needs of maritime transport and industry.

What makes DSM different from other exhibitions in your opinion?
It is the unique environment and community that makes DSM different. It is amazing how locals participate in the preparations for the event. Donsö has strong shipping heritage and traditions which are driving companies to be forerunners. This is reflected in the piloting of innovative technologies and the sharing of best practices.

What are your expectations for DSM2025?
We are looking forward to meeting old and new friends, exploring new business opportunities, engaging in interesting discussions, and getting updates on the latest developments in the sector.

What is your best memory from DSM2023?
The overall atmosphere was exceptional. The Commercial & Financing Meet offered valuable insights once again, and opportunity to visit onboard several vessels moored at the quay was very interesting.

What do you find are the opportunities and challenges in the Shipping Industry today?
In the current geopolitical situation, resilience and security of supply are the critical factors to be considered also in merchant shipping. The main challenge continues to be how the shipping industry can cost-efficiently contribute to climate change mitigation. The ongoing rapid technological progress, including AI and expansion of data centers, is driving a massive energy demand. This growing demand has direct implications for the availability of renewable energy and the production of green fuels. On the other hand, digitalization and AI will bring opportunities also to the shipping industry.

How would you describe DSM in one sentence?
DSM is truly a one-of-the-kind event, and I warmly recommend it to everybody in the shipping industry.

And finally, do you prefer a sail or a motorboat for recreation, and why so?
For recreation it would be a sailboat when the journey itself is the destination.
